CFRB Documentary Radio Pitch

Through the Innoversity™ Open Door Pitch Competition, CFRB Talk Radio is seeking a producer/host who will immerse her/himself into the diverse communities that make up the GTA in order to develop a five part series on the cultural diversity of Toronto, titled "Neighbours". Each of the five 10-minute parts will examine a different community, telling us a story of who our neighbours are in these communities. The viewpoint should come from someone who connects with individuals from these communities not as an outsider, but as a local, and who can allow CFRB listeners to live, breathe and experience the challenges, fears, and day-to-day life that our neighbours are experiencing.

Interested pitch contestants should submit a written commentary on one of the five specific communities and a 60- to 90-second audio-taped description of how they would go about producing this five-part series.

Prize: $2500 development award; the series will be aired in the 2006/07 season.

The winner will be announced at the closing ceremonies of the 2006 Innoversity Summit™.

Breakdown of requirements:

  1. This is a stylized pitch that requires one person (the pitcher) to take on the producer/host role of the series.
  2. The host of the series will go into five different diverse communities, reporting not as an outsider, but as a local, presenting the community to the public in a way in which they will learn about that particular community’s challenges, fears, and day-to-day life.
  3. Choose one community for your pitch as an example of how you would treat the other four communities when you produce them. Give names of people you would interview and or places you would visit. Tell us how you would approach it and why.
  4. Choose the four* other communities that you intend to pursue and tell us why.
  5. Produce a 60- to 90-second tape outlining the OVERALL series and present it in a way that shows the broadcaster that you can handle yourself on radio. This need not be professionally produced in a studio.

*Last year’s winner explored Toronto’s Muslim, Indian, Asian and Sri Lankan communities. Please do not choose all four of these communities.

This is an opportunity for a bright, articulate, go-getter who would love nothing more then to get involved in radio. . .Someone who would enjoy the process of working with and being coached by the broadcaster’s executive producer to not only learn how to operate the studio’s facilities, but also learn what it takes to produce a quality radio show.
