Mobisodes
Spotlight on Through Our Eyes*

The delivery of creative content to cell phones and other mobile technology is now becoming commonplace. As the producers of new technology, the service providers, and the content creators build this new landscape new opportunities arise. Learn where the opportunities are and how to access them from leaders in this exciting movement towards accessible mobile media.

Speakers:
Sudz Sutherland, Filmmaker, Hungry Eyes Production
Jennifer Holness, Independent Producer, Hungry Eyes Production
Raja Khanna, President, Snap Media
Naomi Angel, Program Manger, Bell New Media Fund
Justin Jamieson, Telus Mobility

The Through Our Eyes arts education program was created by two of Canada’s hottest filmmakers, David ‘Sudz’ Sutherland and Jennifer Holness. This innovative project engages 25 kids, some of whom fall into the 'at-risk' category, and introduces them to the medium of film. Meeting weekly for a period of four months, the kids will be introduced to a “key” film professional who will give a brief biographical talk about how they made it into the industry. As professionals of colour they will highlight the exciting non-traditional career opportunities filmmaking provides for the students. Over the course of the program the kids created 7 “mobisode” films (short films made for cell phones) that will be screened at a gala event at the 2006 Innoversity Summit™. The mobisodes will be written, produced and edited by the students, have been selected from grades 6, 7 and 8 from Elia Middle School in the Jane and Finch community. Innoversity is very excited to showcase this pilot project in the hope that it will be extended to many other schools across this city and the country.

Broadcaster Spotlight

The need to engage and include diversity within Canadian Broadcasting is urgent. In this session, the latest programming from Canadian Broadcasters is used to further the discussion on what is being done to address this need. This session provides an insight into the trends developing in Canadian broadcasting related to diversity and innovation.

  • Diversity Online Initiative Presented by Prem Gill, CHUM Television

Diversity Online is a web-based tool / database developed by CHUM Limited to assist the media in reflecting the changing face of Canada. Launched in early 2006, it provides journalists looking for fresh voices and perspectives for their stories with an invaluable resource -- hundreds of diverse subject-matter experts in a variety of disciplines across Canada. The database represents Aboriginal peoples, members of visible minority groups and persons with disabilities, as well as women, the Gay/Lesbian/Bisexual community and youth. Diversity Online also features a media-training component to help people prepare for and conduct successful interviews. For more information, or to participate as a subject-matter expert, please visit diversity.chumlimited.com.

  • 360 Vision Presented by Sadia Zaman, Director, In-House Production for VisionTV

VisionTV's Gemini Award-nominated current affairs series presents an in-depth examination of faith and spirituality in contemporary Canadian life, with incisive documentary reports, interviews and commentaries. Sadia Zaman, VisionTV’s Director, In-House Production, said 360 Vision will build on its strengths to deliver a weekly magazine program that is more provocative and challenging than ever. Said Zaman: “It’s our aim to be a program of record: a definitive weekly examination of the way Canadians today are experiencing faith and spirituality. More than that, we want to be the best current affairs show in this country – period.”

’da Kink in My Hair Presented by Karen King, Production Executive for Global

Global Television Network is pleased to showcase ’da Kink in My Hair, a half-hour dramedy whose 13-episode first season is currently in production in Toronto. The series was created by the all-black team of writers and producers Trey Anthony, Ngozi Paul and Damion Nurse, based on Ms. Anthony’s hit play of the same name. This is the first time a private conventional broadcaster in Canada has commissioned a series with an all-black cast. The producers are committed to a crew comprised of no less than 25% people of colour, and are working hard with the broadcaster to achieve that goal.
  • CBC Winnipeg Comedy Festival Presented by Anton Leo, CBC's Creative Head for TV Comedy.

Now in it's fourth season, The CBC Winnipeg Comedy Festival brings a unique comedy experience to live audience, radio and television.

If you think standup comedy is a twenty-something white guy standing in front of a microphone, think again. The themed evenings focus on concepts and diverse communities that showcase comedy in innovative and daring ways such as Best Medicine which showcases comedians with physical and mental disabilities. Whether it's Our Roots Are Showing where talented performers paint a hilarious picture of what its really like to be a part of our cultural mosaic or Welcome to Turtle Island - a unique hour of Aboriginal entertainment showcasing North America's funniest First Nations comedians, the CBC Winnipeg Comedy Festival continues to demonstrate the power of diversity through humour. Anton Leo is the guiding force behind the creation of the CBC Winnipeg Comedy Festival which brings together more Canadian comics from diverse backgrounds than any other event in this country....a true Canadian success story.
