Chair, Commission for Race Equality

Trevor PhillipsOne of Britain's most forward-thinking public figures -- and sometimes most controversial -- will be a keynote speaker at the 2006 Innoversity Summit. In his time as Britain's Chair of the Commission for Race Equality, Trevor Phillips has provided startling insights into British diversity and ruffled quite a few feathers along the way.

Trevor Phillips became Chair of the CRE on 1 March 2003, appointed by then Home Secretary David Blunkett. He was elected a Member of the Greater London Authority 4 May 2000, and became Chair of the Assembly on 12 May 2000.

Known for his fresh and sometimes surprising views on topics such as diversity, integration, terrorism, freedom of speech and the British way of life, Mr Phillips is no stranger to controversy - or to the British media.

Born in London in 1953, Mr Phillips was President of The National Union of Students in 1978 and 1980, before going into broadcasting becoming Head of Current Affairs at LWT in 1992. From 1987 to 2000 he was variously the Editor or the Presenter of The London Programme. Mr. Phillips won Royal Television Society Awards in 1988, 1993 and 1998."

He was elected a Member of the Greater London Authority 4 May 2000, and became Chair of the Assembly on 12 May 2000.

Trevor is a Director of Pepper Productions, founded 1995 and was the Executive Producer on Windrush (Royal Television Society Documentary Series of the Year, 1998), Britain’s Slave Trade, Second Chance and When Black Became Beautiful. He is a Vice President of the Royal Television Society.

Voluntary

At present Chair of the Young Adults Working group of the Financial Services Authority; a Board Member of The Almeida Theatre, Islington; Aldeburgh Productions; The Bernie Grant Centre, Tottenham; and Patron of The Sickle Cell Society. Between 1993 and 1998 was the Chair of the Runnymede Trust.

In addition to many newspaper articles and comment pieces, he has co-written Windrush: The Irresistible Rise of Multiracial Britain (with Mike Phillips) published in 1998 and Britain’s Slave Trade (with S.I. Martin) published in the following year.
