Karen KingProduction Executive, Dramatic Programming, Global Television - a Division of CanWest MediaWorks.Karen King is the newly appointed Production Executive, Dramatic Programming at Global Television/ CanWest Mediaworks. As a producer, Karen King produced over a dozen award-winning films reflecting a range of Canada’s racial diversity. She is the only producer to have won the Gemini’s prestigious Canada Award twice, along with the Banff Rockie Award, the HBO Doc Prize and Genie nominations. With “Rude”, which had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, Karen became first black woman to produce a theatrically released dramatic feature film in Canada. Her commitment to diversity has spanned the public and private sector where she has worked with companies like Columbia Pictures, Atlantis and Showtime to increase their hiring of visible minorities for their Toronto productions. At the National Film Board of Canada on the Special Mandate Team for Cultural Diversity, she developed strategies for increasing the successful participation of filmmakers of colour in the NFB’s productions. As the founding Executive Director of the New Voices Fund and the Priority Program Fund, Karen commissioned and supervised production on drama, documentaries, reality tv, lifestyle and magazine television. Karen developed effective strategies to engage all the independent producers she commissioned programming from in hiring people of colour on their creative and technical teams. She also put the New Voices Fund in a leadership position by dedicating the entire fund to producers of colour, playing an important role in developing producers of colour in a variety of genres. At Global Television, Karen will be commissioning and supervising production on one-hour drama series, half-hour comedy series, and one-hour limited series. |
