CBC Announces Up To 10 Scholarships For Diversity Summit

The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation today announced that applications are being accepted for up to 10 CBC delegate scholarships to attend the Innoversity Summit in Toronto, Oct. 23-24, 2006, at the Marriott Hotel. The CBC scholarships will give preference to applicants from British Columbia and Atlantic Canada.

The Innoversity Summit is Canada’s premier event focusing on cultural diversity in Canadian media. Innoversity provides opportunities for people working, studying and/or pursuing careers in broadcasting, film and related industries with an opportunity to showcase work, establish professional relationships, attend development workshops, gain mentors and compete for development contracts.

“The CBC is proud to be a Foundational Sponsor of the Innoversity Summit,” said Rae Hull, CBC Television’s senior executive responsible for diversity initiatives. “It’s one of the many things we do to encourage diversity within our industry. Creating this opportunity for creative people from areas outside of Toronto—in this case, British Columbia and Atlantic Canada—to take part in such an event is a strong expression of our role, as the public broadcaster, to reflect Canada’s various regions and cultures.”

The CBC delegate scholarships will cover airfare, accommodations, conference registration and a modest per diem. Scholarship recipients must attend the two-day summit and afterwards submit a short written report on their experience. Preference will be given to applicants who are members of persons with disabilities, Aboriginal and visible minority groups. Preference will also be given to independent media creators, content creators or producers. CBC employees and their relatives are not eligible.

Applications, including four (4) copies of each of the following, must be submitted to Innoversity (address below) by Friday, September 15, 2006:

  • Cover letter, introducing the applicant and why s/he should be considered;
  • A resume focused on applicant’s media ambitions, career accomplishments, skills and knowledge;
  • A plan outlining how s/he will use the summit to further his/her career;
  • Demonstrated financial need;
  • Other relevant information that may help a jury make its selection.
