Press Releases

"Surprising." "Forward-thinking." "Controversial."
Don't miss your chance to hear Trevor Phillips at the Innoversity Summit™!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Toronto, Canada, September 20, 2006… A former broadcast journalist and lifelong campaigner on equality issues, Trevor Phillips is not afraid to court controversy. As Chair of CRE, his views on multiculturalism and segregation have sparked a much-needed debate and provoked strong reactions across the UK.

According to Phillips, the policy of multiculturalism, which reinforces our separateness, has had its day, and needs to be replaced with integration, concentrating on what brings us together, while still recognizing our differences. This policy trend should be reflected on TV: "I would be happy to see the back of so-called multicultural programs, if by that we mean programs defined by the skin colour of those who make them and who appear in them and which are solely about separate, individual traditions."

He believes society is "sleepwalking to segregation", and is becoming divided by race and religion. "In recent years we've focused far too much on the 'multi' and not enough on the common culture. We've emphasized what divides us over what unites us. We have allowed tolerance of diversity to harden into the effective isolation of communities, in which some people think special, separate values ought to apply".

Strong words from the man responsible for an organization that "works for a just and integrated society where diversity is valued."

Is Trevor Phillips a visionary? A radical? Is he wrong, or just ahead of the rest of us?

Decide for yourself. Register now for the Innoversity Summit™, October 23rd and 24th at the Toronto Marriott Downtown Eaton Centre. Two days of learning, creativity, fascinating speakers, dynamic workshops and more. Don't miss out!
