Tempered Radicals are coming to Innoversity Summit™ 2006

Ever felt a bit “different” from your co-workers?

Do you often see changes—some small, some large—that could be made to improve the workplace or sector?

Do you feel you are not part of the dominant culture of the workplace?

Well, there is a name for you: you are likely a “tempered radical.” And you are not alone.

The woman who helped to develop the concept of the tempered radical will make an eye-opening presentation at the Innoversity Summit™. Her work with co-researcher Debra Myerson led to the publication of the book Tempered Radicals.

Maureen Scully, professor of management at the University of Massachusetts, Boston, says tempered radicals are people who are committed to the organization they work for but are sometimes at odds with their company. So they constantly challenge the status quo.

Tempered radicals are often minorities in an organization—women, racial minorities, people with disabilities and even some white men—individuals who are outside the dominant culture of the organization. It is often a personally torturous path. Because tempered radicals pursue goals that are rooted in their own identities, their efforts tend to be passionate. But because they also happen to sympathize with their organization, the changes that they introduce are mostly incremental. They are ambivalent, cautious catalysts, and they are content with small victories that, over time, lay the groundwork for something grander.

In effect, they rock the boat while managing to stay in it.

Managers, “everyday leaders” and those who feel like “outsiders” in organizations will find Ms. Scully’s presentation thought-provoking as well as inspirational.
