What's happening in 2006

Wondering what we’ve been doing the past few months? Planning the 2006 Innoversity Summit™! This year’s Summit will be held October 23rd and 24th at the Toronto Marriott, Downtown Eaton Centre.

Here’s a sneak peek at what’s in development for this year:

Through Our Eyes

Two of Canada’s hottest filmmakers, David ‘Sudz’ Sutherland and Jennifer Holness, have created an exciting arts education program called “Through Our Eyes.” This innovative project engages 25 kids, some of whom fall into the 'at-risk' category, and introduces them to the medium of film. Meeting weekly for a period of four months, the kids will be introduced to a “key” film professional who will give a brief biographical talk about how they made it into the industry. As professionals of colour they will highlight the exciting non-traditional career opportunities filmmaking provides for the students. Over the course of the program the kids will also get to make 10 “mobisode” films (short films made for cell phones) that will be screened at a gala event at the 2006 Innoversity Summit™. The mobisodes will be written, produced and edited by the students, have been selected from grades 6, 7 and 8 from Elia Middle School in the Jane and Finch community. Innoversity is very excited to showcase this pilot project in the hope that it will be extended to many other schools across this city and the country.

Through Our Eyes” is made possible by:

  • The Toronto Police Board Fund
  • TELUS
  • Ontario Arts Council (OAC) Arts Education Projects program grant
  • Innoversity
  • San Romanoway Revitalization Association

Launching of Media Access & Participation (MAP) Initiative

Innoversity™ is developing a “MAP” to make the film and television industry more accessible for people with disabilities. The MAP initiative (Media Access and Participation) will officially launch at the 2006 Innoversity Summit™.

Working closely with representatives of the media industry and Ontario’s Accessibility Directorate, Innoversity™ will develop appropriate learning tools to help broadcasters and producers make the media more inclusive and accessible for people with disabilities, while supporting Ontario’s new accessibility law. Innovative workshops include an experiential room where our delegates will gain a greater understanding of some of the challenges that people with disabilities face on a day-to-day basis, and of the often-simple accommodations that workplaces can make to attract talented people with disabilities.

Career Fair Expansion

Innoversity’s Media Career Fair is an event with great potential for all of our delegates and sponsors. It is also a wonderful platform for launching our “Pitch Yourself” competition, which will provide HR managers with an opportunity to see prospective candidates who might not be strong on paper, but when given the chance to showcase themselves, prove that they may still have great hiring potential. Most of our key sponsors have already agreed to come back on board with Innoversity and are looking forward to helping the Summit expand the Career Fair into an even greater opportunity for everyone.

Formidable Technologies

Sounds formidable? It’s not—this is technology at its best!

Formidable Technologies are the North American licensee for FORscene Technology, which allows producers, directors, editors, reviewers and loggers to access the rushes anywhere in the world on a laptop, PC, Mac or mobile phone. They can log, review, or off-line edit the material with an easy-to-use drag-and-drop interface. Learn about this incredible innovation in production at Formidable Technologies’ workshop.

Showcases of Innovation

This year, Innoversity’s showcases will highlight innovative new practices that integrate diversity into the workplaces and content of the media.

Innoversity Mentors

First introduced in 2005, the highly-successful Innoversity Mentors program is returning for 2006! Mentorship can be so valuable, not only as you develop your career, but at different stages all the way through. Some mentoring relationships begun at last year’s Summit are still continuing today, and some have resulted in jobs!

Master Classes

How-to workshops designed to give our creative delegates vital information on how to move forward in the media industry.
