International Media: Global Perspectives

Speaker:
Tony Burman, Managing Director, Al Jazeera English

Moderator:
Sadia Zaman, WIFT-T

Date: March 9, 2009

Time: 10:00am

Before September 2001, most Canadians hardly knew the meaning of Islam, and certainly did not know about the Al Jazeera global news network. 7 years later, Tony Burman, the head of Canada's largest news operation, stepped down from his job at CBC and became a top executive at Al Jazeera.

In this exclusive and candid session, we ask: How does this assignment change his world view as a media executive and his view of media and global diversity? And, what does he think citizens and media professionals in the West need to be more aware of?

Hosted by Sadia Zaman, Journalist and Executive Director, WIFT-T

Jill Hong, VP of Ethnic Research, Ipsos Reid

In 2008, Ipsos Reid and Diversity Media Services teamed up to undertake Canada's first ever national multicultural research study, looking at the cultural characteristics and buying behaviour of Canada's 13 largest ethno-cultural groups. Looking at the diversity of our nation's consumers and audiences, the study attempts to identify opportunities for cross-cultural communication and engagement.

How can businesses, various levels of government and media outlets use these insights to reach new markets and drive consumers and audience to their services and offerings?

This exciting and insightful research will be presented during a luncheon plenary.
